How Beautiful Are You? Redefining Beautiful by Jenna Lucado

Redefining Beautiful: What God Sees When God Sees You
By Jenna Lucado with Max Lucado
Thomas Nelson Books; $12.99

As a former young girl who grew up with a somewhat warped perception of herself, my first question upon reading Jenna Lucado’s book “Redefining Beautiful: What God See When God Sees You,” is…where was this book 30 years ago?

In a light and lively manner, Jenna Lucado (daughter of bestselling Christian author Max Lucado) brings a fresh but also serious look at what today’s young Christian girls need to feel worthy and beautiful in today’s society. Using stories from her own life, as well as from the lives of girls she has counseled or meet, Lucado reveals that being beautiful is not just about what’s on the outside – the clothes, the make-up, the shoes, the hair – but what’s on the inside of a young girl’s heart and her relationship with God that makes a young woman truly beautiful.
“Redefining Beautiful” is a workbook of sorts, as there are spaces provided throughout the book for the thought-provoking questions, such as “what kind of friend are you?” and “what makes you feel insecure?” Lucado offers unique beauty tips for the outer self, as well as scriptural messages for the inner beauty. Dad Max also contributes his thoughts on God’s love for all his children, and how to stay strong in faith during the tough times.
Jenna Lucado’s book should be required reading for all young girls entering their teenaged years. Her wisdom, for one so young, is vital and timely. I truly wish a book like “Redefining Beautiful” had been around in my time – could have saved me a lot of heartache in life. A perfect book for gift-giving.

Thanks to Thomas Nelson for this review copy!
