Book Blog Tour Stop - Left Neglected by Lisa Genova

I'm proud today to be hosting a book blog tour stop for the amazing book, "Left Neglected," by Lisa Genova.

Life can change in the flicker of an eye. In only an instant, everything that once seemed normal can become abnormal - right can be wrong, up can be down, and right can turn into left in a heartbeat.

Sarah Nickerson was the typical over-worked, over-stressed, over-ambitious wife and mom who was intent on trying to do everything. Living in the good life in the suburbs of Boston, Sarah and her husband Bob were determined to give their young children, Charlie, Lucy and Linus, the best they could. But when Sarah is involved in a horrific car accident, their lives change forever and the struggle begins to find their way back to normal.

Sarah’s accident (she was trying to make a call on her cell phone when she crashed her SUV) leaves her with the rare condition called “Left Neglect,” meaning her brain did not recognize anything on the left side.

In a flash, the once confident, competent woman is reduced to depending on everyone around her for help walking, eating, dressing – everything, and for Sarah this is a huge awakening. As she struggles with rehabilitation and physical therapy to retrain her brain to think “left” again, Sarah begins to reflect on her former life and how different her new life will be as she is forced to slow down and take stock of what is important.

Sarah’s accident has also brought her long-estranged mother back into her life, bringing another aspect to her newly dependent life. As the two women struggle to overcome their sorrowful past, Sarah finds she has gained a new respect for her mother, an emotion that she almost let slip by before it was too late.

In her second novel, “Left Neglected,” Lisa Genova once again delivers a story about family relationships and how they are affected when a life-altering occurrence takes place. Genova, who is a neuroscientist, crafts her story to include the scientific aspects of the injury that changes her main character’s life along with the very non-scientific side of the family relationship and issues that must be overcome by Sarah’s entire family.

This is a beautifully written novel that readers will find heart-wrenching as well as heartwarming.
