Guest Post - Friending The Giant by Jennifer Hudson Taylor

Today, author Jennifer Hudson Taylor is guest posting.

Friending the Giant
by Jennifer Hudson Taylor

In my new novel, Highland Sanctuary, I created the Village of Outcasts, consisting of people who have been rejected by society and ignored. Each one has a different physical impediment that stands out in a negative way. Among them is one of my favorite characters, Quinn, the giant.

For some reason, the size of a giant intimidates others before they even get a chance to know the person. If people aren’t frightened, then they think of a giant as a challenge to overcome. A perfect example is, Gaston in Beauty and the Beast. He was determined to kill the beast to prove he could do it.

In Highland Sanctuary, Quinn may have a deep, broad voice and his steps might shake the ground when he walks, but he’s a compassionate and a tender-hearted soul. His desire to please others makes him vulnerable to manipulation, especially since he isn’t the brightest one of the group. Quinn is loyal and defends his friends, so once you win his friendship, you have a friend for life.

At times I wondered if a giant near eight feet tall would be believable to my readers, but then I thought of the biblical story of David and Goliath, a man between seven to nine feet tall, depending on which translation you read. And then I thought of a verse that has always fascinated me.

“There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.” (Genesis 6:4 NKJV)

I cannot begin to explain all the details of that verse, but it has toyed with my imagination and it confirms that there were more giants than Goliath, so I wrote to my heart’s content. I created Quinn’s character as I saw him in my heart and mind. I hope you enjoy reading about him.

Among them is Serena Boyd, a mysterious and comely lass, who captures Gavin’s heart in spite of harboring a deadly past that could destroy her future.

The villagers happen to be keeping an intriguing secret as well, and when a fierce enemy launches an attack against them, greed leads to bitter betrayal. Then, as Gavin prepares a defense, the villagers unite in a bold act of faith, showing how God’s love is more powerful than any human force on earth.
