Book Blog Tour Stop - Diving Belles by Lucy Wood

Today, I'm hosting a book blog tour stop for the debut book, "Diving Belles" by Lucy Wood.

About Diving Belles: And Other Stories:

• Paperback: 240 pages
• Publisher: Mariner Books (August 7, 2012)

In the tradition of Angela Carter, this luminous, spellbinding debut reinvents the stuff of myth.

Straying husbands lured into the sea by mermaids can be fetched back, for a fee. Trees can make wishes come true. Houses creak and keep a fretful watch on their inhabitants, straightening shower curtains and worrying about frayed carpets. A mother, who seems alone and lonely, may be rubbing sore muscles or holding the hands of her invisible lover as he touches her neck. Phantom hounds roam the moors and, on a windy beach, a boy and his grandmother beat back despair with an old white door.

In these stories, the line between the real and the imagined is blurred as Lucy Wood takes us to Cornwall’s ancient coast, building on its rich storytelling history and recasting its myths in thoroughly contemporary ways. Calling forth the fantastic and fantastical, she mines these legends for that bit of magic remaining in all our lives—if only we can let ourselves see it.

This collection of short stories from Lucy Wood really grabbed my imagination as I read them. They range from slightly deranged tales to hauntingly beautiful essays, and all contain a wee bit of Cornwallish magic that seeps into the words and leaves the reader with a wonderment of what they have just experienced.  I found myself going back and re-reading several passages just to savor the experience of Lucy Wood's way of storytelling.

The wife who sets out to lure her missing husband back from the mermaids of the sea, a girl who turns into stone, the nursing home for witches - these are just some of the themes of Lucy Wood's stories in "Diving Belles," and each and every one of them will leave you with a sense of awe for this young author's talent.  I look for great things to come from Lucy in the future.

WOW!! So glad you loved it! I have to admit, you had me at "slightly deranged," as that's exactly how I like my short stories! :)

Thanks for including the link to the interview; I liked hearing about her favourite story (one of them, anyway) and her travels around Cornwall.
