Book Blog Tour Stop and Review - A Heartbeat Away by S. Dionne Moore

About The Book:

When a band of runaway slaves brings Union-loyal Beth Bumgartner a wounded Confederate soldier named Joe, it is the catalyst that pushes her to defy her pacifist parents and become a nurse during the Battle of Antietam.

Her mother’s mysterious goodbye gift is filled with quilt blocks that bring comfort to Beth during the hard days and lonely nights, but as she sews each block, she realizes there is a hidden message of faith within the pattern that encourages and sustains her.

Reunited with Joe, Beth learns his secret and puts the quilt’s message to its greatest test—but can betrayal be forgiven?

My Thoughts:

"A Heartbeat Away" is a part of the "Quilts of Love" series, a series that features a romantic and inspirational story that revolves around a quilt.

With this story, the pattern featured is the antique Goose Chase, and it is so appropriate to the tale. As Beth and Joe struggle to come to terms with their fledgling relationship in the midst of the raging Civil War, she a Northern sympathizer and he a Rebel soldier, their hearts and minds are in a "chase" around to finding the true love they are meant to experience.

Author S. Dionne Moore manages to capture the background of the Civil War, complete with the horror of the Battle of Antietam - the worst single day battle of the war - while also creating a loving story of hope, faith and trust.  Her research into the era is evident in her vivid descriptions of the time and place, and of the people.

Moore's characters are fascinating - Beth, who wants to be a nurse, but is unsure of herself and her skills; Joe - wounded and desperate to find out what happen to his brother; Grandmother Gerta - a strong and loving woman who's mission to tend the soldiers is so brave and admirable; and Jim - the freed slave who's loyalty and friendship is so crucial to saving them all.

Fans of historical fiction and inspirational romance will find "A Heartbeat Away" an intriguing and satisfying read. I highly recommend it!
