A Christensen Family Novel.
Eden Christiansen never imagined her role as her younger brother Owen’s cheerleader would keep her on the sidelines of her own life. Sure, it feels good to be needed, but looking after the reckless NHL rookie leaves little time for Eden to focus on her own career. She dreamed of making a name for herself as a reporter, but is stuck writing obits—and starting to fear she doesn’t have the chops to land a major story. If only someone would step up to mentor Owen . . . but she knows better than to expect help from team veteran and bad-boy enforcer Jace Jacobsen.
Jace has built his career on the infamous reputation of his aggressive behavior—on and off the ice. Now at a crossroads about his future in hockey, that reputation has him trapped. And the guilt-trip he’s getting from Eden Christiansen isn’t making things any easier. But when Owen’s carelessness leads to a career-threatening injury and Eden stumbles upon a story that could be her big break, she and Jace are thrown together . . . and begin to wonder if they belong on the same team after all.

I am an unabashed fan of Susan May Warren's writing, and I am so thrilled that she is continuing her series about the Christensen family. In "It Had To Be You," she tells the story of Eden, the daughter who feels that she is the family cheerleader with no special talents of her own. But she soon finds that perhaps she does have a gift when unlikely hero Jace Jacobsen steps in to show her that she is pretty special in her own unique way. Perhaps Eden's gift is for showing the people she loves the best in them and by helping them shine, she shines herself.
This is a gentle romance, with uplifting inspirational aspects, that is just a lovely read. There is a great deal of hockey interspersed throughout the story, and I actually learned a great deal about the sport while I was enjoying the tale. There is also the influence of the great love and support of the Christensen family continued in this book, and it's nice to have some updates on the rest of the clan.
Susan's writing style is very engaging - her characters are warm and personable, and the setting in the cold of Minnesota is realistic and plays a huge role itself in this story. Susan also includes enough backstory in this book that first-time readers can quickly pick up on the history of the Christensen's and read this as a stand alone novel.
This book also contains a prequel to the Christensen family's story, "I Really Do Miss Your Smile," which tells the story of mom Ingrid and dad John - and it's a lovely beginning of the family's story! And if you haven't read the first book in this series, "Take A Chance On Me," do yourself a favor and pick it up as well! It's just as great.
I highly recommend this series for any fan of inspirational, uplifting stories with a generous dash of romance. I can't wait for the next book!
