Winter: The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer - Book Review

About The Book:

Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.  Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won't approve of her feelings for her childhood friend--the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn't as weak as Levana believes her to be and she's been undermining her stepmother's wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that's been raging for far too long.
Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters? Fans will not want to miss this thrilling conclusion to Marissa Meyer's national bestselling Lunar Chronicles series.

My Thoughts:

I chose "Winter" as my first read of 2016 for two reasons - 1) I received it as a Christmas gift, and 2) I have loved the previous books in this series, "The Lunar Chronicles."  Plus I thought the title was appropriate for this time of year.

As a concluding novel in a multi-book series, "Winter" wraps up the various story lines from "Cinder," "Scarlet," "Cress," and "Fairest," very neatly. That being said, there is still plenty of action, plenty of twists and turns, and a huge amount of suprises to be found within the story of Winter, the fragile princess of Luna, and her friends. The returning characters are wonderfully developed and continue to grow through this book, and the climax of the story is unexpected and fulfilling.  There is love and sorrow, joy and sadness, fun and struggles to be found within these pages, and the reader is guaranteed to be kept enthralled to the very end.

Marissa Meyer brilliantly intertwined the various fairy-tale stories of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White with this futuristic, science-fiction, fantasy-themed body of work. Her masterful storytelling made all of these books an absolute delight to read, and I am sorry to see the series end.  I look forward to the next project that Meyer has in the works!

*There is a special collection of short stories that revolve around The Lunar Chronicles series set to be released in February. Titled "Stars Above," the book will feature 8 never-released stories about the characters from all the previous books, plus a look at Meyer's new series based on the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland! I can't wait!!

Sounds an interesting choice as a first read.

Your review makes me want to start reading this trilogy sooner rather than later. My daughter has read all the books and is currently reading this one.
